Bieler's Broth
I want to help. “Make Bieler’s broth,” Irene suggests. “Use the veggies in the fridge.” She heads back upstairs with a ceramic pitcher of water. I find a striped denim apron on a hook in a cupboard and put it on. I’ve never made Bieler’s broth before. I now it’s that vegetable soup people make when someone’s very sick; I think it was invented by some German health food guru. I open Irene’s refrigerator and peer into chaos. I gingerly remove several Ziploc bags full of vegetables from the crisper, trying to avoid the ones with brown liquid pool in the bottom.
